Chapter 7

Xander

Cami had appointments until seven, so I decided to do a little Christmas shopping. My mind was still racing after all I’d discussed with my band, and I wasn’t in the mood to go home and mull over those thoughts. Security trailed along behind me, though I could easily go unrecognized. People were in too much of a hurry to finish their shopping to notice me.

I’d just purchased a gift for Cami, and I was heading back to my car when I heard the soft strum of an acoustic guitar accompanied by a male voice. The musician had more talent than any street performer I’d heard in recent months, so I decided to head his direction. There was a big crowd preventing me from getting close enough to see him.

I’d never heard the haunting melody before and wondered if the musician had written it. I continued to listen as I tried to get closer. He was rough in some areas, but there was no denying his talent. It wasn’t a happy song, and I noticed a couple of teenaged girls wiping their eyes. It was the goal of every good musician to touch his audience.

After he finished playing, several people dropped money in his guitar case before moving along to continue their shopping. When he looked up at one of the people and smiled, I got my first clear glimpse of his face. It was Braeden.

I started to approach at the same time as a police officer. I don’t know what possessed me to intervene when it might piss off Cami. The kid was a runaway, and I knew I should probably let the police take him back to the group home, yet I couldn’t do that.

“There you are!” I called out. “Did you get talked into playing again? I keep telling you to stop carrying the guitar around if you don’t want people to ask you to play. The cops will get the wrong idea.”

Braeden looked startled, and the police officer looked suspicious.

“I got a call from one of the shop owners about a kid panhandling out here,” the officer explained. “Can I get some ID from both of you?”

“Sure.” I grabbed my wallet. “Well, you can see my ID, but the kid doesn’t have any on him. He doesn’t have his license yet.”

The officer took my driver’s license and looked down at it before looking back at me. “Alexander Marsh, as in Xander Marsh?

“That’s me,” I confirmed.

“Well, I’ll be damned. I thought you looked familiar. It’s great to meet you. I’m a huge fan.”

“It’s always nice to meet a fan,” I replied. “This here is my protégé. The kid’s got a lot of talent, doesn’t he?”

“I didn’t catch the performance. You may be good,” the officer told Braeden. “That doesn’t mean you can just start playing for money in a shopping area. I’m going to let you go with a warning this time, but if I catch you again, I’ll write you a citation and call your parents.
